Twilio SIMs can connect to hundreds of networks around the world - 2G, 3G and LTE.
In the United States, T-Mobile USA (our sponsor network) supports LTE frequency bands 2, 4 and 12. Almost all newer consumer communications devices will support these frequency bands out of the box, but use-case specific devices tend to support only a few bands per device.
As such, we have provided a list of devices below that support these frequency bands and that may be relevant to your project.
You must set the APN to wireless.twilio.com on compatible devices to establish data connectivity. See APN Configuration.
|USB Modem||Huawei LTE USB Modem (LTE bands 2, 4) Note: Huawei LTE modem is best used on the Windows and OSX operating system.|
|Ethernet Bridge||MultiTech LTE Portable Router (LTE bands 2, 4)|
|WiFi Hotspot||Netgear Aircard 815S (LTE bands 2, 4, 12)|
|WiFi Router||Mofi WiFi Router (LTE bands 2, 4, 12)|
|Development Kit||Wio Tracker LTE (LTE bands 2, 4, 12)|
As part of T-Mobile’s continual improvements, you will start seeing the 3G 1900 MHz spectrum move to LTE. Please be aware that these changes will impact your customers with 3G 1900 Mhz only devices. Devices with 3G Band 4 will not be affected by this change. Devices with 3G 1900 MHz and no other 3G bands, will fall back to 2G 1900 Mhz in these markets, assuming the device supports 2G 1900 Mhz.
Optimal cellular connectivity comes from supporting as many cellular frequencies – 'bands' – as possible in the markets you are targeting.
For LTE: The global LTE landscape is particularly diverse. An LTE module that can connect to a cellular network in one region or state does not necessarily mean that it will connect in a neighboring region or state. If you plan to ship an LTE device, you'll need to trade off the hardware cost of supporting more bands with a single module vs the operational costs of managing multiple device SKUs.
For 2G/3G: 2G and 3G are simpler. Generally speaking, two bands required in the Americas, while two bands are required for the rest of the world. Additionally, 2G and 3G technologies are being decommissioned by operators around the world. Consequently, you should expect 2G and 3G coverage to diminish over time.
Below you will find a condensed list of 2G, 3G, and LTE frequencies and bands supported in the USA and the rest of the world.
|lte||700 Mhz (Blocks a, b, c)||12|
|lte||700 Mhz (Blocks b, c)||17|
|lte||1900 Mhz (Blocks a - f)||2|
Twilio SIMs can roam onto almost all global carriers, using 2G, 3G and LTE where available. The global 2G/3G landscape is significantly simpler than the world's LTE landscape.
