Programmable Wireless: Your First Steps

Welcome to the start of your cellular Internet of Things journey!

Here you’ll find a list of the setup tasks that you need to perform in order to begin exploring Twilio’s cellular connectivity for IoT.

Step 1. Order a Programmable Wireless SIM

To connect your IoT device to the cellular network, you first need a Programmable Wireless SIM. You can order your first SIM through the Console.

Once you’ve received your SIM, you’ll need to register it with your account and activate its network access. This guide walks you step-by-step through ordering and activating your first SIM.

The Twilio Programmable Wireless SIM introduces some new terminology and makes use of features that you may be unfamiliar with. We have a guide that will get you up to speed.

Ordering and activating a single SIM is a beginner’s process; when you’re ready to deploy SIMs to device fleets, you’ll do that through the Console and activate them there too. More details in our Programmable Wireless > Advanced Topics section in the navigation panel on the left.

Step 2. Assemble your development hardware

You need a device to try out your SIM. The tutorials linked below include list some off-the-shelf parts which you can use to assemble a test device. The parts are available from a wide selection of electronics suppliers, and they provide all you need to build, connect, and operate a sample IoT device so that you can get a clear picture of how your IoT product will work at scale.

Step 3. Build your IoT product

You’re now ready to start work building your IoT product. We’ll be adding a lot more content in the coming months — tutorials, sample code, hardware design and application development guides, and deployment advice — to help you on every subsequent step of your IoT journey, from proof-of-concept to prototype to product.
